Computer Equipment

We assume you computer has Windows 2000 or XP and you know a little about how to operate it. Two important pieces of information about your computer are its processor speed and the amount of RAM installed. RAM is often referred to as memory. Processor speeds range from 1GHz to 2.80GHz. The higher the speed, the fewer microseconds you have to wait for some thing to happen. Pentium 4 CPU processors at some speed around 2.53 megahertz or greater is more than enough for most people. RAM, or memory, is something you can never have too much of. For modern machines 256 megabytes is a minimum. 1GHz is better for large file handling and photographs.

The Internet

The Internet is a collection of large and small computers generally called servers. They provide access to smaller collections of data that range from libraries of specific data to a place to buy widgets or play games with someone in the Ukraine. The World Wide Web is just a bigger, wider, fatter version of the same thing. To get there, and expose yourself to the newest incurable addiction (called web surfing) you must think about several things.

Connection

For your computer to connect to the Internet you must have a modem, cable or DSL.

Internet Service Providers

To choose an Internet service provider, you need to consider what you want to do on the Internet. Factors to include in your decision are:

  1. Are calls to the ISP local or long distance?
  2. When I'm away from home, are there local numbers in other parts of the country?
  3. How frequently do users get a busy signal when they call in?
  4. What is the initial hook-up charge?
  5. What are the charges for limited usage and unlimited usage?
  6. What "other charges are there?
  7. How difficult is it to reach a real person if I'm having trouble?

A few words about browsers are in order. A browser is a collection of software, which allows you to find things and connect quickly to the Internet and the World Wide Web. Right now the two best browsers are Internet Explorer by Microsoft and Netscape Communicator by Netscape. You've heard all the flap about Microsoft. Bottom line is, if you have Windows, you have Internet Explorer. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN UP WITH MICROSOFT AS YOUR ISP. In fact, I would suggest you not. The easiest browser to use is Netscape Communicator. It is also nice because it is available on the Internet free of charge, as is the latest version of Internet Explorer. If you choose Internet Explorer, download the latest Version. To do this, use the version which came with your computer to access the download site for Microsoft and follow the instructions. You are now an expert! If not, you can use some terms to talk to an expert.
